Station 1 Cafe, Johor Bahru

If you just need a place with chat chit with old friends in a relaxed setting, Station 1 Cafe (Johor Bahru) might just be a place to liven up your night life.

Open in mid 2009, Station 1 cafe has been drawing teenagers and young adults in Johor Bahru. And they have the right ingredients just for that. Besides free WIFI internet access, broadcasting of EPL (or now known as BPL) matches, they provide a relaxed setting with vapour coolers, live bands and a decent menu of alcohol and finger snacks. The long daily opening hours from 8am to 2am means that night owls and morning birds can flock here at their preferred time.

Pattaya Restaurant – A taste of Thai Food in Johor Bahru

If you have been driving through the Tebrau Highway recently, you might have realised that on the direction towards Tebrau City from the Johor Bahru CIQ (just 3 minutes away), there is a small stretch of shops on the right, all bearing the “Pattaya” logo in yellow. Opened in middle of 2009, this Thai Restaurant has been whipping up authentic Thai food in the likes of Tom Yam soup, Pineapple rice, Thai Style fried chicken and the likes.. at least that is what is being advertised.

On Dec 2009 (Christmas Eve), we decided to pay the restaurant a visit just to sample the dishes and to see for ourselves if this is a worthy food hunt for posting on Limsimi.com.

The waitress greets us at the doorstep of the Pattaya Restaurant with a smile and we are led to our seats. The interior decor of the restaurant is simple with some attempts of creating an authentic Thai Restaurant atmosphere. For example, there are wooden cravings, paintings of elephants and Thai cloth-work which lines the walls of the restaurant. Ironically, while we are expecting photographs of Thailand’s revered King: King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the only royalty pictures we see are that of the Johor Sultan.

The air-con in the restaurant is sufficient and as we are nicely settled, we peer into the menu to order our Christmas feast. Almost 90% of the menu comes pre-fixed with the word “Thai-Style”. For example, there is Thai-Style Stir Fried Prawns, Thai-Style Chicken with Green Mangoes, Thai-Style Stewed Chicken with coconut shoot and the list goes on. Price looks decent and we hope that the serving is large too Read on…

Ro Sma Rino Italian Restaurant, Johor Bahru

Besides the common Asian fares (like Bak Kut Teh, Dim Sum etc..) you can find in Johor Bahru, there is a little restaurant that you should pay a visit if you want a gastronomic change.

Ro Sma Rino is a restaurant run by an Italian and his wife. Located at No 123, Jalan Damai, Taman Sri Setia, Johor Bahru, Johor 80300, it is within 5 minutes drive from the Johor Bahru CIQ (U-Turn after exiting the Johor Bahru custom, look out for a slip road to Jalan Damai).

The exterior of the restaurant does not look fanciful but once inside, the restaurant is nicely decorated with a cosy feel. The lighting is a little dim but gives you a feeling that you are really in an “Ang-Mo” restaurant. There are usually just a handful of staffs and the lady boss will personally attend to you.

There is a variety of food you can select, from pasta to risotto, Pesce (fish), Carne (meat) and a small selection of red wine. Quality of the food is great – the pizza are thin crusted and baked on the spot. Main courses are prepared with attention to details and presentation. See some of the photos below Read on…
