Cash Cow – Shell Petrol Station at JB CIQ Exit

January 19th, 2009 lawrence.gan

There used to be a time when you have to queue up to fill up your tank at the Caltex petrol station, the one located right before the old Johor Bahru custom. This even though Caltex petrol station has close to 30 refilling booths.

Familiar sights includes staffs holding thick wads of cash on their hands (from the collection of sales), presence of oil tankers maneuvering into the station to top-up the oil reserves and the of course, the license plate of most vehicles that starts with either a “S” or an “E”. Some of these drivers are seen mysteriously pressing their vehicle downwards harmonically. All these to ensure that the maximum petrol can be squeezed into the petrol tank, where each litre pumped equates to certain savings.

With the obsolesce of the old Johor Custom, this Caltex petrol station is made irrelevant. The new kid on the block is the Shell Petrol Station that is situated right outside the Johor CIQ .

Barely 100m from the Johor CIQ exit (in the direction towards Jalan Tebrau), it is convenient point for refueling. In addtion, some Singaporeans patronize this station as it is also one of the nearest to the Johor CIQ entrance (to Woodlands) as well.

Besides refueling, this station has a SELECT minimart as well as a washing bay for “Snow Wash”.

A wonderful combination of location and good business planning makes this Shell Station a potential cash cow for the owners. Looks like some of the wealth drained from Jalan Wong Ah Fook has been allocated here. Snow wash.. anyone?

Just to add that I heard both the Caltex and the Shell stations which you mentioned are both owned by the Johor Royal Family.

I guess the station must be doing so darn well to even consider offering Internet access – even SG petrol station do not have this!
