MACS – No more white card to Johor Bahru

July 25th, 2010 admin

If you are a frequent visitor to Johor Bahru and the pages in your Singapore passport is running out, don’t fret. If you are fed up of filling white cards every time your visit Johor Bahru, do not be frustrated.

In line with supporting the economic development of Iskandar Malaysia, Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) was developed to fast-track immigration clearance, as long as your are eligible.

What this means is simply:
YOU DO NOT NEED TO FILL UP WHITE CARD FOR EVERY JOHOR BAHRU VISIT ANYMORE.

If you are traveling by bus to Johor Bahru, you simply join the queue with all Malaysians at the auto-gate clearance (fast!). If you are driving, even the custom officer at the booth will smile at your as he does not need to even stamp your passport. He simply scans your entry into the system.

MACS Application Form

MACS Application Form

Eligibility
1. You must be a Singapore Citizen in possession of an international passport with minimum validity of two (2) years;
2. You must not be  listed in the Immigration Suspect List;
3. You must demonstrate that you are a regular JB visitor (the best way is to ensure you have at least 4 round trip Malaysia custom stamp in your passport for the past month).

Application Process
1. Forget about applying through the Internet. Their online system sucks. Do it in person.
2. Bring along a passport size colour photo, your passport (of course), RM$30.00
3. Go to either of the following address (open 24 hours!!):

Pejabat Imigresen Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Johor Bahru
Jalan Lingkaran Dalam
Aras 3 Utara
80300 Johor Bahru
Johor, Malaysia
Tel No: +607-2182424
Fax No: +607-2234233

Pejabat Imigresen Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar
343, Jalan Bukit Kuching
81560 Tanjung Kupang
Johor, Malaysia
Tel No : +607-5133040
Fax No: +607-5133057

4. Request for a form and fill it up on the spot. A similar form (Malaysian Automated Clearance System application form) can be downloaded as a soft copy here.

5. Submit the form to the immigration officer and pay the RM$30.00.

6. Viola! Within 15 minutes, you will get back your passport with a sticker and an electronic tag at the last page of your passport. This tag will be used by the Malaysia Customs to track your entry/exit. No more white cards!!

Practical Pointers
1. The MACS sticker on your passport is only good for Johor Bahru customs and cannot be used outside these 2 customs, for example at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or Senai Airport. This means that you will still have to fill up the white card if you fly to Malaysia.

2. It is very much advisable to apply for the MACS while you are still at the JB customs, BEFORE you have stamped your passport. The application both at both customs are located within the assembly area, near the elevator area.

3. If you are applying at Pejabat Imigresen Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, note that the office is just to the right hand side of the writing table where you fill up the white card.

4. If you are getting to the immigration office from City Square, you will first need to change your pass using either your NRIC or driving license before you can proceed to the immigration office.

5. Note that the MACS pass is valid for one year only, and needs to be renewed yearly.

Ok, guys. I made the MACS thingy abt 2 mths ago. It’s worth the effort besides not having to fill the white card, life of your International Passport is extended by not filling up with mudland immigration stamps. If you’re a frequent traveller, it’s worth the 30 ringgit a year to apply for MACS.

    Required items -

    1) Passport size photo, color.
If you dun have, juz pop by any photo shop ard JB and get an urgent snap (tell the photo uncle that u need it for applying MACS, he’ll know what to do in terms of the size etc)

    2) If you’re driving, park at city plaza basement carpark and walk over to JB Sentral (the immigration bldg) via the overhead bridge. U can ask the locals for directions there.

    3) Once u cross over to the Immigration bldg, ask the police abangs for directions. He’ll direct u to a counter to get a police pass. This is required because u’ll be walking ard inside their immigration bldg. They’ll also pass u a paper chit to get it stamped at the MACS counter on yr way back out.

    4) Ask for directions again from this police counter to the MACS dept. Waiting time about 1/2 hr during weekdays. U need to fill in a form (see website), pass them the photo and your Int Passport.

    5) They will take the last page of your passport and emboss this with the MACS details, incl a small frame of your photo.

    6) After u get the passport, chk everything’s fine, get the paper chit stamped and retrace your journey back to the police counter (get yr document back in exchange for the stamped paper chit) and back to city plaza.

Now, with MACS, u’ll be wheezing thru’ the checkpt like the mud locals.

Cheers and have fun chionging JB..

Can somebody please tell me how a 10year Singapore Permanent Resident (not citizen) can get a MACS or anything like it to save the constant passport stamping on the Malaysian side of the causeway, on the Singaporean side i just place my passport in the machine and it scans my thumb and i’m in, i asked at immigration (MY) and they mostly said “cannot” but then i was directed to Wisma Persekutuan immigration Dept. by the friendly immigration lady, i haven’t visited that Dept. yet, so any information i can get will be most valuable.

    Many Thanks in advance
