Malaysia to stop Singapore vehicles from topping up petrol

May 27th, 2008 admin

In the latest development, Malaysia has implemented a new policy to stop Singapore vehicles from topping up their fuel tanks in Johor Bahru (Johor Baru, Johore Bahru, Johor Baharu). This policy will take effect on 30th May 2008. Considering the hefty fines for the Petroleum Companies (RM250,000 for violations), I am sure this policy will be strictly enforced.

What this means to Singaporeans driving to JB will be:
Increased cost that will diminish the value of driving to JB. Together with the restrictions on palm oil and other necessities, you can certainly expect a short term decrease in motor traffic.

What this means to Malaysians working in Singapore (and driving Singapore cars!)
There are many Malaysians whom
1. Works in Singapore
2. Drives a Singapore car
3. Stays in JB (So they commute everyday across the causeway, twice)
4. Top up their petrol in JB
This particular group will fell the strongest pinch. It is ironical how a Malaysia policy that aims to retain fuel subsidies for Malaysians will end up affecting this particular group (of Malaysians) most. This will at least set each vehicle owner back by $150/month.

Until the Malaysia Government can firm up a plan to specifically address the issue of keeping fuel subsidies to Malaysians, citizens from both sides of the causeway will feel the financial pinch. This knock-on effect on JB economy will be known in the coming months and this may also factor into the next action the government is taking.
