Johor Art Gallery (Galeri Seni Johor)

Located at Jalan Petrie, near to Thistle Hotel and the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, the Johor Art Gallery (Galeri Seni Johor) is tucked away in a quite corner as a standalone building. The building was originally known as the Dato’ Abdullah Jaafar Building, built before the start of World War I in 1910. Unknown to many, this building was the headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II (well in the first place, most of the locals are not even aware of the existence of this art gallery..)

Several transitions took place until the year 1994, when the building was officially launched to host the artworks related to the culture of Johor. In 2003, the Johor Art Gallery was enhanced with air-conditioning and improved documentation of artworks.

Dataran Bandaraya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Dataran Bandaraya was built in Jan 1994 as a proclaimation of Johor Bahru as a city. In the initial years, it plays host to many performances and events. While the crowd has dwindled in recent years, you can still see people gathering here for a game of football (there are 3 fields facing Dataran Bandaraya) or simply for food, especially on Sundays.

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque – Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Opening Days: Saturday – Thursday (10am – 6pm)
Admission: Free

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque overlooks the Straits of Johor. Perched atop a hill, it is located near the Johor Zoo and Sultana Aminiah Hospital – a 15 minutes drive from the Johor Custom.

Tourist are allowed to visit the mosque. However, there is a need to be sensitive as the ground is considered to be sacred and any distractions should be kept to a minimal. Try not to use flash photography in the mosque itself. In addition, stay away from Fridays which is the day of the week most muslims come for prayers.
