Johor Art Gallery (Galeri Seni Johor)
November 14th, 2009 admin
Located at Jalan Petrie, near to Thistle Hotel and the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, the Johor Art Gallery (Galeri Seni Johor) is tucked away in a quite corner as a standalone building. The building was originally known as the Dato’ Abdullah Jaafar Building, built before the start of World War I in 1910. Unknown to many, this building was the headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II (well in the first place, most of the locals are not even aware of the existence of this art gallery..)
Several transitions took place until the year 1994, when the building was officially launched to host the artworks related to the culture of Johor. In 2003, the Johor Art Gallery was enhanced with air-conditioning and improved documentation of artworks.
The gallery is quiet most part of the day (even during weekends), with less than 10 visitors at any one time in the gallery. While the artworks do not really rival those in the Lourve, it still provides an interesting insight into the expression of locals and occasional theme exhibits. Admission is free and with the comfort of an air-conditioned setting, Johor Art Gallery is a good relief from the food and cheap shopping Johor Bahru is commonly associated with.
Visiting hours: 9.00am – 4.30pm daily, except Public Holidays
Admission: Free
Address: Galeri Seni Johor, JKR 144, Jalan Petrie 80100, Johor Bahru
Tel: 07-2263266

Hi there, I am currently in a KL hotel backpacking. Saw your website and have decided to cut short my trip here (have been here for the past 3 days) and head down to Johor Bahru and Singapore.
Any idea what is the best way to travel in Johor Bahru? There do not seems to be any metro, while for Singapore, they have this MRT which I think it the metro equivalent.

Hi, I have moved to JB recently and would like to join a course related to art and craft. Does anyone know if there are any art or handicraft classes being conducted anywhere in JB?
Please let me know if you do know of anybody conducting such lessons.
Thanks!

Hi Irene,
I have been taking art and craft lessons from Page 1 Academy for almost 8 years. Stopped after I moved to Singapore to study, but i definately like the place and teachers there.
You might want to give it a try.

for ww2 buffs, at the back of the gallery building is an engine and propeller from allegedly a Japanese Zero fighter.

I’ve been to johor art gallery once for enquiries about arts and crafts classes in johor but the people who works there seem clueless. Its just a dead place to display artwork and nothing else. If you are looking anything more than that, don’t bother making the trip. Its such a disappointment that the only art gallery in JB did not have more info or did not promote any other related/affiliated art schools/workshops in JB.
