Baby Products in Johor Bahru
June 27th, 2009 florence.tan
If you are a young parent in Singapore, you might be buying your baby products at Cold Storage. The items you may want to buy includes baby diapers, formula milk powder, baby wipes and baby skin care products. If you want to save some money, you would perhaps try NTUC/ Giant/ Carrefour. For even lower prices, your parents will advice you to go to Sheng Siong or the traditional Chinese medical hall (yes, they sell some baby products too).
Even lower prices? Johor Bahru.
Now, we all know that things are relatively cheap in Johor Bahru (compared to Singapore). But just how cheap is cheap?
In this post, we do a quick comparison of some baby products - essentials that you need to stock up frequently if you are a young parent.
Baby diapers
One of the most frequently purchased items, your baby needs about 5-8 diapers/day. This equates to about 150 diapers/ month!
i. Huggies Dry Comfort Medium (66 pcs)
-NTUC: S$19.65
-Cold Storage: S$21.80
-Johor Bahru Carrefour: RM$31.99 (S$13.15)!!

Baby Formula Milk Powder
i. Enfalac HA Milk Formula (900g)
-Cold Storage: S$46.00
-Johor Bahru Carrefour: RM$81.99 (S$34.00)!!
ii. Enfagrow A+ (4x DHA) Milk Formula

I am one of those parents who shop for baby products in Johor Bahru. People do stare at me and my hubby cuz we buy about 5 packs of diapers for our 2 kids at a time.
At the price of diapers I buy in JB, I think supermarkets in Singapore, they must be laughing all the way to the Bank. Prices are too marked up in NTUC and Cold Storage. As one of my friends pointed out, Sheng Siong not that is cheap. It is NTUC and Cold Storage which are expensive!

Hi Grace,
not too sure of the prices at UO Supermarket. However, they are unlikely to be as cheap as Carrefour and Tesco.

Florence

No limit on how much you can purchase from Malaysia. I usually buy about 4 900g cans at a time but not more, so as to get the more “fresh” cans. 4 cans can last me about 5 weeks, so that is when i will go in to JB again.

Dear Mummies, for milk powder, you might also want to check out online offers. Brands like Abbott and Frisco sells direct online too, so do the math and see if it is cheaper to buy in JB.
I had bought milk powder from JB on several occasions. For example, the similac milk powder sells for S$39.50 in SG but only RM$78 in MY – abt S$30. However, I realise that besides the wordings (MY cans are in Malay language), the composition is slightly different even though both cans are actually manufactured in Sg.
You can realise the savings only if you buy > 5 cans/trip to JB. Also, you need to assure yourself that the quality of milk powder is the same. For the latter, I am not so sure, which is why I buy online from Abbott now.

Hi Laura, there is no real limit. However, if there are excessive purchases, you might be taxed. I usually stick to 5-6 tins and 6 diapers. Enough to last 2 months!

Hi Ichel, not sure for Similac bit at least for Gain step 3 900ml, the composition is exactly the same – protein, omega3, vitamin B etc..
Selling at RM$50 in JB while in Singapore, sells for $28.
Hope this clarifies.

Hi Lee HS, buy in moderation. And really, the baby products are not controlled unlike oil and sugar which are subsidised items in Malaysia. You will not raise an eyebrow if you buy 6 packs of huggies into Singapore for example.
If you order via courier, there might be a chance the these items may be taxable. In addition, I will never order consumables like milk powder from courier – I’ll rather take it off the shelves for better peace of mind.

I have been getting stuffs from Malaysia since my first kid who is noe 6. And now, I am having a pair of twins. Items from milk powder, diapers, baby wipes are always purchase in bulk. In fact we go in almost 2 times every month. ( either milk powder or diaper for every trip). My twin girls finish one can of powder every 4 days…. imagine the cost if I buy from S’pore!… and how much have I saved since 6 years ago. Thanks to my gynae, who recommend me there..

Hi,
This will be the first time that we are buying baby items in JB. We don’t have a car so we’ll just take bus from SG. Can you suggest the nearest supermarket in Johor from Singapore that we can go to?
Appreciate your help. Thanks!
