Danga City Mall – Easy Access with KTM train/rail

January 3rd, 2009 florence.tan

Danga City Mall, formerly known as Best World has re-opened to the public on 31st Aug 2008. While the occupancy rate is only about 70% now, the shopping mall is set to see a marked increase in tenants and visitors from 5th Jan 2009, when the KTM beings rail operation with 4 daily stops to the shopping mall via Singapore.

Note: Do not confuse Danga City Mall with Danga Bay Festive Mall. Danga Bay festive mall is along the Danga beach and further away from the JB Custom while Danga City Mall is a stand-alone Shopping Mall located at Jalan Tun Abdul Razak . See the photo of Danga City Mall below. Train station is located just behind the building in this photo.

For non-shoppers, the rail is good news as well! If you

work in the city area in Singapore, you can hop on this quad-daily services to JB. Plenty of cab in Danga City Mall so you can also consider using it as a gateway to other nearby destinations. Anyway, Danga City Mall is just 2km away from City Square.

Admin’s Note: There have been questions regarding to the access of Danga City Mall on the following points:
1. Whether reservations are required
2. Whether there will be enough seats
3. Whether it is possible to buy a return ticket from the Singapore KTM office
4. And whether it is possible to book/ reserve a ticket online.
Please refer to the Q&A here. Feel free to post additional questions as well.

Thinking of taking the train there timorrow. Any problem with buying the ticket when I reach Tanjong pagar station in the morning Jan 6th. And is there any problem of getting a return ticket or do I need to purchase the ticket in advance

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

Hi YK, no issues if you buy the train ticket at the Tanjong Pagar Station itself, although you should buy it at least 30 minutes before the actual departure just in case there is any hiccups at the ticketing counter. In addition, because it is a free seating coach, you should try to board the train 15 minutes before departure to guarantee yourself a seat or you will need to stand throughout the Singapore leg of the journey.

Finally, I have to comment you cannot buy the return ticket from Singapore KTM ticketing booth. You can only purchase a return ticket at Danga City Mall station itself, so the logical thing to do is to buy a return ticket immediately upon arriving at Danga City Mall. As the KTM website is really unreliable at times, do have a copy of the train schedule with you in case you misses your intended train. You can also refer to the train schedule here as a reference:

Have a smooth journey and great shopping tomorrow!

Can i buy the ticket online using ktmb.com.my ? also, i could actually make a further train trip from JB?

    Hey Mark,

    1. As of today, I still do not see the option of booking a destination to Danga City mall from their website so your best bet is to get it from the Tanjong Pagar KTM station directly.
    2. You can also make a further trip from JB. For example, you can take the Ekspres Lambaian Timur train that departs SG at 5.35am and arrives at Danga City Mall around 6.20am. At 8.34am, you can hop on to the Ekspres Rakyat train at Danga City mall to Kempas Baru and then to KL and.. all the way to Ipoh!! Make sure you get the right tickets.

Waited 1 hr 30mins for the train to Singapore today! There was delay and the staffs are unable to explain to me the cause of the delay. Was originally so happy with this new service because the train route fits in nicely from my home in JB to Singapore downtown. Hope it will become more stable and reliable

I travel to JB from time to time. How far is Danga Bay City Mall from the new Immigration & Customs checkpoint. How do I go this shopping mall by bus from the JB customs checkpoint. There are buses along the road opposite the City Square Mall. What bus number can I take and how much is the fare.

Is it possible to show the location on the map highlighting the prominent buildings like Pelangi shopping centre.

    Thank you.

Just to add a little more info on the process of taking the train from SG to JB, based on my experience.

    1. Go to Tanjung Pagar KTM train station. Nearest MRT is Tanjung Pagar, but still need to walk abt 20mins to the KTM stn.
    2. Purchase the train ticket there for whichever train you intent to take
    3. Clear the Malaysia Immigration at the Tanjung Pagar station. (Your passport will not be stamped. They will stamp it on the white immigration card instead.) If you dont have the white card, just request from the officer. He should be walking around asking if you need one.
    4. Clear custom and board the train
    5. When reach Woodland checkpoint, all passengers must disembark the train
    6. After clear immigration, you re-board the train (hv to wait for 30mins or so at the immigration hall)
    7. Takes a few mins to reach JB KTM stn. The train will stop for a short while.
    8. No need to get off the train. You have already cleared the M’sia immigration at Tanjung Pagar, remember?
    9. Thats it.
    10. Have a nice journey!

Hi Admin, abt d train schedule from s’pore, isn’t too early (good for those travelling further up north ) and why only 2 slot available;5.35am & 7.40am. More suitable for those working here or there. But if it for leisure..den I have to wait till 2pm,should i still want to depart from tanjung pagar..hmmm otherwise i go there by bus/taxi den get a ticket back home at danga bay to tanjong pagar. :(

Quite a true and interesting comment. The timing is indeed a bit werid.. and even if you arrive so early (by taking the 1st 2 trains), most of the shops will not be open. And for some, the 3rd train at 2pm could be quite late.

When I yesterday arrived at the trainstaition Tanjung Pagar I saw on the board in the hall that the departing time was 6 pm and that time was very convenient for me. But now I don’t see that time any more in this scedule on internet. Is there a train at 6 pm? I also want to go further to Kukup, I here that you must do that by taxi. Where can I make a reservation for a taxi in Johur Baru with someone who speaks English? Or may be there go buses?

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

There is a train departing at 6.38pm to Danga City Mall, if that is what you mean.
For Taxi Reservation, you can call +6073322855 for Comfort Taxis and indicate to the operator that you will need someone who can communicate in English.
Else, There are also plenty of Taxi drivers who will be keen to take you to Kukup near City Square.
As Kukup is quite some distance from Johor Bahru, you can take a bus from Larkin Bus Terminal to Pontian, after which a cab ride from there to Kukup will be much cheaper.

To add on to what I posted earlier on the process. Here I ll describe the process of taking KTM train from from Malaysia to Singapore.

    1. Get the tkt and board the train from Danga mall
    2. When reach JB train station, you don’t need disembark the train. The immigration officers will go onboard the train to check your passport (Isnt this nice? I think this is the only immigration point that, the officers come over to you, rather than you go over to them. U dont hv to stand in Q to clear immigration.)
    3. When train reach Woodlands checkpoint, you have to disembark the train to clear SG immigration & custom.
    4. If you stay in the northern part of SG, you can choose to exit from the SG CIQ to catch taxi/bus to ur home
    5. If u stay in the southern part, then u just wait to re-board the train
    6. The ride from Woodlands chkpt to T.Pagar takes abt 20-30mins
    7. From there, home sweet home….

can tickets be purchased in advance prior to the day of travel?
when do you suggest i try and buy a ticket?

    Hi Wonderful,

tickets to Danga City Mall cannot be purchased in advance. You can only purchase a ticket on the actual traveling day itself.
You can expect some crowd on 24th Jan but there should be seats if you catch the first 2 trains of the day which departs from Singapore at 5.35am and 7.40am respectively.(esp the 1st one).

You can also call Tanjong Pagar KTM directly at Tel: 62225165 for any enquires.

    Greetings Admin,

Is it possible and convenient to walk from Danga Bay Mall to DNP Plaza and Wadihana? If yes, what’s the approx. distance?

I’ve friends living in DNBP Plaza and Wadihana. From your map, both condo seems to be near. Thanks

I assume you mean DNP Plaza? The green colour building along the stretch of New York Hotel?

It is possible to walk. However, there are no defined paths for pedestrians and it is best to avoid the main roads where car tend to speed (making it more dangerous). Do ask your friend on the best route to take as they should be familiar with the vicinity. Make sure you hold your handbag closely to avoid snatch thefts as well.

Hi, the Revised Train Schedule is as broadcast by KTMB, the train operator. So I assume that to be in place. In addition, they have already broadcasted the updated schedule in Danga City Mall itself and selling those tickets.

From the feedback we have received, do not expect the trains to be punctual. Some have even experienced a 1.5hr wait for a scheduled train. The timings are indicative at best.

You should be able to flag for cab at Danga City Mall or Kotaraya itself. In the unlikely event that there is no cab that early, approach the information counter for help. Alternatively, call +607-3322855 to book a cab.

    Hi Kaira,

the train timings are a little off, and often late. A cab ride to the JB CIQ will take about 10 mins and cost around RM8.00.

There is also a bus (Bus Maju) you can take from Danga City Mall to City Square for RM$1.00. However, the schedule is really erratic and not dependable, so I do not advise you to go for that.

Hi! I love this page, cos now I know how to get to Danga City Mall by train! But I have a few questions if you can assist me:

    1. When we leave from Tanjong Pagar station to JB, the immigration officers will stamp on the white card right? Will they stamp our passport upon departure from JB or will they just collect our cards, making it seem like they did not stamp our passport at all?

    2. If let’s say I would like to go from Singapore Tanjong Pagar to Danga and say, go to CIQ Complex (and take a bus back) instead, will I have problems with immigration, since my passport was not stamped?

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

    [Reply]

  • 41. adminNo Gravatar  |  April 4th, 2009 at 5:04 PM

There is a long story for this Ron.

If you need to travel from Singapore to Malaysia, you are supposed to go through the Singapore CIQ first, before the Malaysia CIQ. Vice Versa for travel from Malaysia into Singapore.

Now if you travel by train from Singapore to Malaysia, the Malaysian Authorities at Tanjong Pagar CANNOT stamp your passport, as you have now pass through the Singapore CIQ yet. But the Singapore CIQ is at Woodlands!

The right way to do this is actually to re-locate the Malaysia CIQ to Woodlands.

The Malaysian Authorities however, refuse to move the Train CIQ to Woodlands, as doing so will make them lose a prime piece of land at Tanjong Pagar, where the KMT is currently situated.

So there goes.. you only stamp your white card/ form at KTM Tanjong Pagar. Not the passport.

Now if you want to return to by bus from Singapore to Johor Bahru, you need to retain the white card and preferably the train ticket from SG-Johor Bahru as additional proof.

That should suffice, although sometimes, a new custom officer at Johor CIQ may be unsure about this and ask questions and cross check against his/her superiors.

SG and MY should sort this out in our current generation. No point for MY to continue holding to Tanjong Pagar – they cannot develop the piece of land for other usage. if u have been there, it is quite poorly maintained too.

Oh okay… wow that’s really kinda complicated actually. Then if that is the case, maybe I should either stick to all train or all bus journey to save trouble. Thanks!

And yes I have to agree that the SG and MY authorities should sort this out. It’s not gonna help both sides, really.

    Hi,
Are most of the shops open at Danga city mall already?
If its’s boring which are the best shopping complex to go to nearby. (I dun have a car). Is danga bay good?

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

It is still less than 50% occupancy. Nearby, you can consider City square. If you are willing to travel further, aeon tebrau city is more interesting, 15minutes cab ride away. You can also go to Danga bay which has a festive street mall (smaller than tebrau city) and plenty of eateries. It is also about 15 minutes cab ride away, along the straits of johor.

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

10am: Go to Danga Bay for shopping at Festive Street Mall and a leisure stroll around the vincinity
12noon: Take cab for lunch at Gianni’s Trattoria
2pm: Take cab to City Square to do you hair, manicure/pedicure and catch a movie
6pm: Dinner at City Square and make your way home.

Once you are more familiar with Johor Bahru and traveling around, you can explore further places like Aeon Tebrau City (with Cinema), Aeon Bukit Indah (Plenty of Hair Saloons) and Sri Utama.

Hi I just heard that there is no longer any service to Danga Mall… is that true?
It seems KTM just runs the normal Sin-KL train with the JB stopover. Disappointing cos i was hoping to finally try out the service…

There are still train services. However, some of the train timings have been cut, which means there is now a lower frequency of trains that ply Singapore/Danga City Mall.

Hi, I hardly travel but would like to bring a friend to Danga Mall… have been researching on the net but not much info except for here…

    1. What are the updated train timings?
    2. Can I still buy the tickets on the spot 30 mins before boarding?
    3. What is Danga Mall’s website?

Hope U can help me, thanks!

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

    1. Find it here at dangacitymall.com
    2. You can. Train timings are not very reliable though and often late.
    3. See (1).

You might also consider going there via taking a cab from the Johor CIQ instead, esp if u stay in the north.

I was there recently. My second visit, my first being a year ago. My conclusion remains the same. Less than half the building is occupied. A third of the shops sell kiddy stuff. Metrojaya doesn’t seem to be a draw because it’s really upmarket prices, like what we pay in Orchard Road.
If you are still game to explore, there is now free bus shuttle service from Thurs to Sun, leaving every hour except at 1pm. You can take the bus from CIQ’s bus bay 7-10, next to a mama shop. It’s just 10mins ride to Danga.

getting there – was at CIQ’s bus 22 bay, and caught the CT2 bus at 10:25. RM 1.20. Got to mall by 10:35.

According to the bus driver, the bus runs once every hour and ends by 3. So plan your shopping schedule carefully.

Oh yes, some enterprising bus driver of CW1 might tell you that CT2 is no longer operating and persuades you to take his bus. We were asked to deposit 1.50 RM, not into the official collection box, but into his personal tray :) . He dropped us off opposite the mall, and we had to risk dashing across the busy highway. So be warned!

can someone pls tell me does the train stil go to Danga City mall from Tanjong Pagar Singapore and is it worth going there. What kind of shops do they have? Thanks

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

Hi Alan, I still maintain that it is not worth going to Danga City Mall at this point in time. Too many fashion shops and not much variety.

I would suggest Sutera Mall as an alternative.

And yes, the train still goes from Danga City Mall to Tanjong Pagar, Singapore for now.

I believe the prices for the train from Singapore to Malaysia has increased, other than the shuttle to K. Lipis. It’s now SGD13. Yes, 260% increase.

Will update again after i return tomorrow.

    0615 and 1855 trains are SGD3. The rest have increased to SGD13. I think there’s a 1300 one that is SGD9 (iirc)

    Hi,

I moved to Malaysia for my work few months ago. My friends and family coming over for holidays from India. They are 7 adults and 3 kids, they wants to go to Singapore (park, city etc). I live in JB city can anyone tell me best way to go to Singapore (Zoo, Sentosa, Singapore city etc)?. I came to know there is a direct bus going from JB-Sentosa but they will not wait for us to clear MY-SING Immigration clearence. I’m planning for 4 days daily trips to Singapore and come back to JB at night. I tried to rent a van but it’s all 7 passenger van and we are total 10 passenger. Kindly let me know my best options.

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

Hi Neema, you might consider the following attractions in SG:

    1. Zoo
    2. Sentosa
    3. Orchard Road
    4. Little India
    5. Chinatown
    6. City Hall (Suntec City/Marina Square)

It can be quite tiring for your family to travel in/out to Singapore from JB daily for 4 consecutive day, but definitely save you on accomodation. What you can do is to still put them up at JB but plan to travel in early to lessen the wait time at customs, and travel back early to JB as well, before 5pm. Zoo open at 8.30am, so you can start traveling at 7.45am if possible to SG.

With regards to transport, in SG, simply take bus or MRT. If you are going to the zoo for example, Chua Chu Kang MRT is just 3 stops from Marsiling MRT and after which, you can switch to a SMRT bus straight to a zoo. Between JB and SG, consider taking bus (if you travel early) or you can get the yellow cabs at Koto Raya. If you have elderly parents, I suggest you charter a mini-bus instead.

I’m planning on a nolstalgic railway trip before KTM ceases operations at Tj Pg and am keen on sampling JB’s tasty fares while I’m there.
Is it possible to buy the famous Yun Lai Pau within walking distance of JB central besides travelling all the way to Kulai, or are there other famous JB paus I should look out for?
Where are the popular hawker streets located?
    Thanks in advance.
How much is the fare from Kulai back to Tj Pg? (have trouble accessing the KTM fare page)
What public buses can I take from JB cental to Kulai?
