No more free Plastic Bags on Saturdays at Johor Bahru Hypermarts

The sight is familiar.

At the checkout counters at Giant, Tesco, Carrefour or Jusco in Johor Bahru, there are long queues of shoppers eagerly waiting to assist the cashier in packing the purchased goods onto the trolley. Besides speeding up the checkout process, the shoppers can use as many plastic bags as possible. All these in a bid to ensure adequate plastic bags at home which can be used for the rubbish bin.

Starting 1 Jan 2011, you will have to pay 20 sen (about 8 Singapore cents) for each plastic bag when you shop at hypermarkets, supermarkets and Petronas service stations on Saturdays. These plastic bags will be free on any other day. Things are even worse in Penang, where shoppers will have to pay the 20 sen every day of the week for each plastic bags.
