Editor’s Note: The following post is contributed by Wee Fang, a Limsimi.com reader.
As a proud parent of 3 kids (2 girls and a boy, all below 5 years old), both my husband and I spend quite a fair bit of our combined salary on baby products. We do most of our shopping at either Sheng Siong (Woodlands) or once in a while, we travel down to Carrefour at Suntec City as there is a greater variety of products. We would take the opportunity to do some quick shopping for ourselves while in town.
We do our shopping once every month and so you can imagine how stacked up our trolley would be. But there is simply too many things to buy as parents. Baby Diapers, Baby Milk Formula, Baby Pajamas, wet and dry tissues and many other more which are considered daily necessities. It would easily cost about S$400-S$500 on baby products so we do try at times to save on some items – most of the time by either downgrading to use a cheaper brand. It does not help that products are continuously re-packaged and sold at a higher price (new packaging but the product inside is the same).
I moved to Woodlands since 2005 but seldom ventured to Johor Bahru, only crossing with causeway with the occasional once-in-a-year Chinese New Year visit. While I am aware that most baby products in Johor Bahru are somewhat cheaper (from a limsimi.com posting), I am unable to imagine heading North with my 3 tots in tow. It is until recently when I got a maid and my caring parents agreed to babysit for me on a Sunday morning that my husband and I could drive into Johor Bahru. Our first stop is to TESCO (the one opposite Aeon Tebrau City) as Lawrence Gan recommended to me.
And to cut right to the reason why I am writing this post, the baby products sold in TESCO are simply much cheaper than that in Singapore. To the point I felt compelled to share with most parents in Singapore who have been buying from Cold Storage, NTUC and even Sheng Siong.
First, a quick summary of what I bought.

Wee Fang: My purchases from TESCO, Johor Bahru
In all, I spent about RM$650 and calculated that if I had bought the same products in Singapore, it would cost me about S$450. This meant that I can save S$180 every month if I did my shopping in Johor Bahru and to add on the petrol savings, it is probably a net saving of S$210/month.
To all parents, here is the breakdown cost of individual products:
1. Huggies Dry Comfort (XL Size, 54 pieces)
Cost in Tesco, Johor Bahru: RM$35.99 (Comes with free wet tissue too!)
Cost in NTUC Singapore: About S$21.00 (RM$50.40)

Huggies Dry Comfort
2. MAMY POKO DIAPERS (XL, 12-17 KG, 50 pieces)
Cost in Tesco, Johor Bahru: RM$45.99
Cost in NTUC Singapore: About S$24.00 (RM$62.00)

MAMY POKO DIAPERS
3. Gain Plus Step 3 (900ml)
Cost in Tesco, Johor Bahru: RM$48.30
Cost in NTUC Singapore: About S$31.00 (RM$74.40) Read on…

The next regular series of the PIKOM PC Fair 2010 (II) will be held at the usual venue: Persada Johor Bahru, from 9th Jul – 11th Jul 2010.
Besides laptops and netbooks going on sale, you can expect an increase in OEM printer ink sales. Recently, OEM manufacturers had began to sell not only OEM printer inks, but also resorted to modifying printers to extend print cartridge into the external of the printer for easy refills. It remains to be seen whether such manufacturers will sell such printers outright in PC fairs such as PIKOM.
Refer to the image below for the full schedule of PIKOM PC Fair in Malaysia.
