A very quiet Plaza Pelangi

Just went to Plaza Pelangi today and it has been some 6 months since I last visited the mall. Located right at the heart of Johor Bahru city center and with it’s iconic rainbow facade fronting an important junction of the Tebrau highway, Plaza Pelangi has struggled to keep up with the new malls springing up all over Johor Bahru.

The mall is eerily quiet and you are able to find empty car park lots near the escalator lobby, something quite impossible just 2 years back.

With the exception of a few shoppers scattered around the various levels and sights of shutters drawn down at every level , you wonder if this plaza can continue its operations much longer. Doubts also linger if Metrojaya (already having a new presence nearby at Danga City Mall) would continue to stay as the anchor tenant.

Despite this, I enjoyed my shopping experience today as I do get the peace and quiet while shopping. The sales assistants Read on…

Tesco at KSL City, Johor Bahru

Since its grand opening in Jul 2011, the crowd at Tesco, KSL City has somewhat dwindled. In fact, the entire KSL city looks pretty quiet with the exception of food/eatery outlets at the ground level when we last visited on 30th Jul 2011.

For first timers, do not expect the Tesco KSL city to be equivalent to Tesco Extra, Tesco Bukit Indah or Tesco Tebrau City. The size of Tesco KSL City is about 70% that of Tesco Tebrau City. Nevertheless, it is not as crowded and still offers a decent range of products from fresh groceries, fruits, stationery, baby diapers, cereals and noodles.

Nearest to Johor Bahru CIQ, first 2 hours of parking free if you spend more than RM5.00 (yes, only RM5.00), plenty of shopping attractions at KSL City itself.

Cons:
Lower product range compared to other Tesco stores in Johor Bahru, less Read on…

Growing fruits and vegetables at your own backyard in Johor Bahru

Many Singaporeans purchase property in Johor Bahru to enjoy the perks of a landed housing. While having your own swimming pool is still far-fetched even by Malaysian standards, you should minimally get to have your own backyard to grow fruits and vegetables. And if you can maintain it well, you will get a decent harvest – enough for your own consumption, and which is even fresher than what you will ever get in wet market or hypermarts.

In this post, we cover some of the most common fruits and vegetables Johoreans grow.

#1: Banana
First off the list, Banana is largely associated with the famous Malay snack – Goreng Pisang. While you are biting off the sweet and crunchy bits, do not be surprised if the source of this is from a kampung backyard. Other usage includes the usage of banana leaves to wrap another famous Malay food – Nasi Lemak. Banana actually contains vitamin B6 and C and is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer and breast cancer. In addition, many locals hail Banana as a fruit which improves sexual prowess. Well, you will just have to try it for yourself.

#2: Aloe Vera
While Aloe Vera juice is widely used as a relief for digestive issues, many Johoreans use it as a moisturizer on the face instead. Simply peel off the outer skin and run the interior translucent tissue of the Aloe Vera on your face, washing off the juice after 20 minutes. Most Johor Barhu aunties swear by it as the perfect antidote for teenage facial acne and dry skin. And it is free too!

On a really hot day in Johor Bahru, think about having a lime juice which is made right off your backyard. Relatively easy to Read on…
