RTM Signal Scrambled on Starhub

If you had been able to receive RTM TV1 or TV2 channels via Starhub Channel 118 and planned to watch World Cup 2010 via this channel, be in for a disappointment.

Nothing surprising and similar to the previous World Cup, Starhub had confirmed yesterday that they will be scrambling the signal from Channel 118 for all World Cup matches.

This means that all you will see is Gaussian white noise on Channel 118 during World Cup matches.

Time to go back to the good’o technology days when people buy long or fishbone antenna and extend it beyond their windows to get over-the-air signal. See a video contributed by one of our readers when she uses the long tail antenna in Singapore to capture over-the-air RTM TV1 signal:

RTM World Cup Schedule

For those of you who have not subscribed to the Singtel-Starhub World Cup 2010 package and do not intend to, we have listed down the RTM World Cup Schedule for your reference.

Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is slated to broadcast most of the World Cup matches and presents an alternative (and free) option if you are able to receive RTM network within your vicinity in Singapore. World Cup 2010 schedule is listed against local time in Singapore and Malaysia.

A nice alternative then paying lucrative subscription fees to Singtel and Starhub, nor do you need to travel to pubs or entertainment joints to join in the action.

Watching World Cup in Johor Bahru or on Malaysia RTM Network

There used to be a time in Singapore when we do not have to pay a single cent extra to watch the World Cup.

So when Singtel and Starhub “proudly” announced that they had clinched a deal to bring World Cup 2010 to Singapore, I felt a sense of disgust. The final package works out to S$70.64 for early birds and S$94.16 for late birds. At the price of early birds, it works out to slightly over $1/ match. Compare this with paying just S$25 for World Cup 2006.

The head honchos at FIFA must have known how football crazy Singaporeans are, and drawing comparison against the rights Singtel pays for EPL (where we are one of the highest payer per capita), had demanded a similar competitive offer be made. So now, they are smiling all the way to the bank while Singtel and Starhub are left frowning if sufficient Singaporeans would be willing to pay this amount of money to enjoy the beautiful game.

I will like to add to the voices of Singaporeans and call for a boycott of World Cup 2010 subscription.

And in the process, let Singtel and Starhub have a rude awakening to better understand market sentiments and appreciate the fact that Singaporeans will not be held hostage to unreasonable prices, even if most of us can afford it.

And in the process, let EPL and World Cup organisers know that Singapore is not as lucrative as what was impressed upon them and put some sense into their modelling of the prices they should charge our Telcos.

And if we want to watch World Cup 2010 (all the matches), we do not have to look far. Across the causeway, our friendly neighbours have been calling out to us.

1. Watching it on RTM network.
If you are not aware, Malaysians can watch the World Cup for FREE! RTM had announced that it has been appointed the licensed broadcaster for the FIFA World Cup 2010 event with matches being telecast over TV1 and TV2. So start tuning your antenna northwards and if you can get a good reception of RTM1/ RTM2, congrats! You have saved $70.64 and more importantly, own the right to give FIFA the middle finger and say, “Screw You! I can watch World Cup matches for free!”.

2. Making the trip to Johor Bahru
If you cannot get RTM networks, make the trip to Johor Bahru! Nowadays, most mamat stores Read on…
