Watching World Cup in Johor Bahru or on Malaysia RTM Network

May 15th, 2010 admin

There used to be a time in Singapore when we do not have to pay a single cent extra to watch the World Cup.

So when Singtel and Starhub “proudly” announced that they had clinched a deal to bring World Cup 2010 to Singapore, I felt a sense of disgust. The final package works out to S$70.64 for early birds and S$94.16 for late birds. At the price of early birds, it works out to slightly over $1/ match. Compare this with paying just S$25 for World Cup 2006.

The head honchos at FIFA must have known how football crazy Singaporeans are, and drawing comparison against the rights Singtel pays for EPL (where we are one of the highest payer per capita), had demanded a similar competitive offer be made. So now, they are smiling all the way to the bank while Singtel and Starhub are left frowning if sufficient Singaporeans would be willing to pay this amount of money to enjoy the beautiful game.

I will like to add to the voices of Singaporeans and call for a boycott of World Cup 2010 subscription.

And in the process, let Singtel and Starhub have a rude awakening to better understand market sentiments and appreciate the fact that Singaporeans will not be held hostage to unreasonable prices, even if most of us can afford it.

And in the process, let EPL and World Cup organisers know that Singapore is not as lucrative as what was impressed upon them and put some sense into their modelling of the prices they should charge our Telcos.

And if we want to watch World Cup 2010 (all the matches), we do not have to look far. Across the causeway, our friendly neighbours have been calling out to us.

1. Watching it on RTM network.
If you are not aware, Malaysians can watch the World Cup for FREE! RTM had announced that it has been appointed the licensed broadcaster for the FIFA World Cup 2010 event with matches being telecast over TV1 and TV2. So start tuning your antenna northwards and if you can get a good reception of RTM1/ RTM2, congrats! You have saved $70.64 and more importantly, own the right to give FIFA the middle finger and say, “Screw You! I can watch World Cup matches for free!”.

2. Making the trip to Johor Bahru
If you cannot get RTM networks, make the trip to Johor Bahru! Nowadays, most mamat stores open throughout the night and you WILL be able to watch football matches on the big screen (most of these mamat stores or coffeeshops have projectors that beam the match against 120 inch white backdrop). You have saved $70.64 and more importantly, own the right to give FIFA the middle finger and say, “Screw You! I can watch World Cup matches for free!”.

After which, you can down a cup of teh tarik at only RM$0.70 and pump some cheap JB petrol before heading home. What a fulfilling trip!

3. Staying in Johor Bahru itself
This sounds a little extreme but gather a bunch of friends and stay over at any Johor Bahru Hotel. You pay only the accommodation (around RM$80-RM$150) and can enjoy the matches at the comfort of you hotel – screaming all you want. You might have spent more than S$70.64 but still own the right to give FIFA the middle finger.

In addition, you can rest assured that you will not wake up your wife or kids with your incessant screaming.

4. Watching it online
There ARE websites which allows you to view World Cup matches online, FREE! We will not be posting such websites here, but just GOOGLE! You have saved $70.64 and more importantly, owns the right to give FIFA the middle finger and says, “Screw You! I can watch World Cup matches for free!”.

Equally importantly, you have also discovered the website that can allow you to watch EPL, La Liga and Serie A for free!

I can assure all that next world cup, the price will double if FIFA is successful this time round. Will you pay $150 4 years later? Time to send a signal to FIFA.

Yeah, RTM TV1 and RTM TV2 will broadcast football due to licenced to broadcast FIFA 2010 for terrestial broadcast for Malaysia and Singapore but many Malaysian doubt on RTM compared to Media Prima which have better review and better broadcasting quality.

An example is F1. F1 is the best when it broadcast on Media Prima at 8TV compared to RTM TV2 which some of the circuit didn’t broadcast live causing Malaysian questioning effectiveness on RTM broadcasting live sports.

Astro give new temporary channel for live matches on Astro sports package by updating the decoder for all matches unless they not subscribing sports package.

Mamak stall will open 24H for football matches and order some double cheese naan dua and carrot susu satu. Freedom to shout GOALLLLLLLL! Maybe I going to mamak stall with my friends to watch live matches when I returned to my campus.

If not mistaken, Indonesian TV can get reception in Singapore and Johor Bahru isn’t it? Another additional channel for free in Singapore and Malaysia to watch another live matches. Indonesia will broadcast live matches on RCTI and Global TV.

Don’t forget tune Starhub TV channel 118 RTM TV1 on FIFA 2010 if any area can’t get Malaysian TV due to building interruption.

Good Night Malaysia and Singapore. From Curious Malaysian (Zharfan)

Yeah, good idea to watch free WC rather than pay for Singtel mistake in raising the stakes for the country! Good thing for EPL is that the government is steping in after this Singtel contract ends regulate the pay tv industry. By the way, Does anyone know whether the commentary for TV1 is in malay or english?

Hi Carol, the official World Cup schedule has not been released by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) yet. However, do keep a lookout in this thread (you can subscribe to our trackback service). We will post the schedule here the moment it is released by RTM.

My whole family did not subscribe to World Cup package. We had been happily receiving RTM signal from M’sia and watching the matches in RTM TV1 for FREE.

    Commentaries are in English.

It is amazing why anyone pays S$70 for a World Cup. For this money, I can watch a tier 2 EPL match LIVE in person in England and soak in the full atmosphere.

Lastly, I will like to really know if Singtel profitted from the World Cup this year? If no, please WAKE UP and tell FIFA to be more sensible next WC.

And someone.. please develop our Sss-league.

More quality so that we can be entertained. The last match I watch in Woodlands, the ball turnover is so high and no buildup or excitement at all!

Hey Desiree, I will be driving in tonight. Probably go to this place called Da Pai Dang where they air the match on a projected screen.

    It is along Jalan Beringin.

You can bring your friends to join us if you are coming around. We are a group of Singaporeans and Malaysians in our late twenties. :p
