Johor Bahru Bridal Package Hunts – Diary of an Anxious Bride-To-Be

January 6th, 2009 Pipi

Never in my sanest mind have I ever imagined that I would even think about taking up a wedding bridal package across the causeway in Johor Bahru (Johor Baru, Johore Bahru, Johor Baharu), Malaysia. Stories of words spelt wrongly imprinted in bridal albums, stories of couples risking their lives and wallets at the mercy of robbers and snatch thieves, all in a bid to save a few thousand, but ended up losing more. Stories after stories that do nothing except to reinforce my impression that it is a trip that is not worth even a thought in my mind.

I was (as you would have probably guessed) WRONG.

Firstly, I was proven wrong by the beautiful album layouts and designs that I saw with my OWN EYES. My own brother and my best pal, both had their wedding/bridal photo shoot taken with Johor Bahru Bridal studios and the album design was so awesome and captivating, that it gave me a little second thought of pursuing an album in Johor Bahru. And hence, this second thought catapulted me into my first investigative action of prying for insights and valuable information in the internet realm. I went into several online forums with still, a cynical mindset. It was a battle of words between satisfied couples and couples who felt that they were ‘conned’ into signing, given utterly bad service by the bridal studio after paying the initial deposit. I also learned what to negotiate for, which bridal shops to look out for, etc.

Equipped with weeks of ‘information download’ into my brain memory space from the internet, I embarked on my maiden journey across ‘THE BRIDGE’ totally prepared to tussle and wrestle with every breathe that I have, with any sales person from the bridal studio in a quest for my most “Value-For-Money” PLUS top quality album package. Kiasuism at work!!

I had already shortlisted 7 bridal studios, namely:

Superstar Wedding @ CitySquare
Printemps Wedding @ CitySquare
Dawn’s Wedding @ CitySquare
Mona Lisa Bridal Palace @ CitySquare
Fables Bridal Couture @ Taman Sri Tebrau (near Taman Sentosa)
Venus Bridal Selection @ Taman Sri Tebrau (near Taman Sentosa)
Inspiration @ Taman Sentosa

After visiting the 4 bridal studios in City Square, none really caught my attention. None of the salesperson I came into contact with gave me the assurance I need to take that leap of faith in signing on the dotted line. It seemed like everyone of them just wanted to clinch another deal and I could see $$$ in their eyeballs. For Superstar and Mona Lisa, the layout of the place is like any typical bridal studios, with little brains put into the design and layout of the store. It was simply boring and served little to ignite further interest to know more about their package.

Mona Lisa was the only bridal boutique that did not even allow us to take notes of their package details.  Printemps and Dawn (actually are sister companies) are the more impressive of the lot. They had more upclass feel upon setting foot into their store, especially Dawn’s. They had a more urban and zen touch to their store layout, with gowns ‘parked’ in built-in cupboards which could easily be ‘pulled out’ from the wall.

It was at Taman Sentosa area that I was convinced why heaps of Singaporean couples braced themselves to travel to JB despite the massive traffic jams and the large amounts of time spent travelling across the causeway over several weekends, flocking willingly (and perhaps happily) to the Johor Bahru bridal studios. Venus and Fables Bridal Couture.. we were totally swept away by their photography studios, which convinced us straight on the spot that it had to be either one of them.

We finally found the reason why Johor Bahru bridal studios are worth the trouble. We had taken a photography album at French Bridal in Singapore before and were utterly disappointed with the results. It was lack of digital design (as we had to pay more to include digital pages) and were mainly pictures of us with white, orange, brown, red coloured paper background. We finally found ourselves on the opposite poles! As we toured bridal studios in Johor Bahru (Taman Sentosa area), I started imagining myself and my hubby posing with the various studio settings they had – Rose Garden, Winter Forest, Roman Colosseum, Sunflower Garden, Chinese Lanterns, Victorian Candlesticks, Florence settings, etc. Lovely!

My heart, for once, starts to beat a tad faster. We were sold by the enchanting and diverse backdrops we saw at these two bridal studios. Fables had 6 different backdrops, while Venus had 13. No more plain backgrounds anymore! Yippee!! Understand from both studios even that they actually update their backdrops every few months, to avoid couples all having the same album designs. Mmm.. for once, I smelled the aroma of ‘customer service’ seeping into the air at last. At Venus, one of the photographer said that to change a backdrop (they recently took away ‘Cinderella Castle’ backdrop) costs them at least RM 10,000!!! Gown selections and package wise, both were competitive enough.

We were more convinced by Venus, kudos to an experienced sales person, Ivy, who took the time to let us ‘tour’ the studio and to comb through every gown in all their racks. She gave me the liberty to try out any gowns I desire (think about more than 25 gowns), even though I hadn’t signed on the dotted line. Considering the fact that some studios at City Square didn’t even allow me to try any!!! So, my vote and $$$ goes to Venus, mainly because they had more background settings in their studio. This is their ultimate differentiating factor.

A word of caution for potential Inspiration patronisers. I have read much about the salesperson there and his crafty salesman tricks in Singapore Brides Forum. For more than an hour, Eric (the salesperson) spoke more about their service rather than to tell me what is in the package. He was full of words, giving analogies, quoting Chinese proverbs, etc, rather than telling me facts. I do not feel comfortable at all with him and hence, striked out Inspiration among my shortlisted studios.

And there you have it!! Step One. The shopping experience was an eye opener and a great learning experience. No doubt the hassle, I am confident that this will be a step forward towards the formation of a terrific bridal album, which no doubt, will collect dust over the years (as what many have told me and dissuaded me from spending so much time on this, when I could have easily taken the pictures in Singapore), but I am also very sure that one day, there will be a time, perhaps decades later, that I will chanced upon old albums like this, and look back at the precious memories embedded behind the pictures, coming alive and helping me to relive the happy moments of the past and putting that million dollar smile on my face, saying “It is worth it.”

And finally, a great thanks to the staff at limsimi.com (Lawrence.. Thanks!! and Florence.. many thanks to you too!!) for their kind recommendation and encouragement. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my incessant email queries!

-pipi

Hi Wen Chin, different people places different emphasis on selection of a bridal shop. Some look mainly at the gown, others at the photo effect. And then there is a need to balance this with pricing. We will be coming out with some reviews of our own as a guide. Stay tuned!

I have decided to sign up with Fables. Glad I went in to take a look as the photographs are better and the price definitely cheaper than Singapore. Venus is not bad too but i prefer the gown at fables.

well actually my husband-to-be also prefers fables gown! But because venus could give us a more competitive package and they had more backdrops for indoor photoshoot, so, we decided on Venus. Congrats still on the completion of your bridal shop search process! :)

Hi, can anyone tell me how do you go to these 2 bridal shops from Singapore checkpoint?
I am not familiar with the JB streets.
Is it hectiv to travel there, considering couple of trips are required from package selection toward wedding dress pickup? My AD will be in Singapore. Thanks.

Fables Bridal Couture @ Taman Sri Tebrau (near Taman Sentosa)
Venus Bridal Selection @ Taman Sri Tebrau (near Taman Sentosa)

    THanks.

Hi, you need to make a number of trips if you intend to take the whole package:

    1. Selection of Bridal House + Selection of photoshoot gowns
    2. Photoshoot + Selection of Photos the next day (If you stay overnight in JB, else it will be an additional trip)
    3. Viewing and collection of the photographs/ Selection of Bridal gown.
    4. Collection of bridal gown + Make up of car (will need to drive the bridal car in)
    5. Collection of bridal car

Overall, will save about SGD$1,500. In addition, the photo finishing is generally better (if you select Fables or Venus).

    From SG checkpt:
    1. Make your way to Johor CIQ via public transport (If you do not drive). Take bus 950,160,170 or CW1,CW2.
    2. Take a cab at Johor CIQ to Taman Sri Tebrau (5 minutes, RM$8.00-9.00).

Finally, note that there is a bridal fair at City Square this coming weekend (see our post here:http://www.limsimi.com/services-johor-bahru/wedding-bridal-packages-johor-bahru/bridal-fair-at-city-square) . So might want to consider making a trip down.

    Happy Planning!

    Hi Huizhu & pipi,

Does your pkg include Makeup Artist & Photographer? If my customary is held in SG, do we need to pay additional charge as they’re coming out from JB. Wedding car decor, to use own car? Or do they provide a SG car? Will be gg to Fables and Venus over the wkn to check out their rates.

    Hi C|trus,

my package does not include AD makeup. You will need to separately pay the makeup artist if you need their service on the AD. In addition, if your customary is held in SG, you will need to pay more for the makeup artist come over to SG.

Car Decor is included in my package. However, need to provide your own SG car. Ask your hubby to drive in. It is near to the JB custom. :)

I am getting married on the 14/11/09 and I am thinking of getting a bridal package from either venus or fables, however I am on a budget, plus the fact that I am only having a church wedding, could you advise me on how much I should budget for as a bridal shot package? Thanks.

    Hi Faithlovebags,

if you only have church wedding, you can tell Venus or Fables that you will like to swap the rental of evening gowns for more photographs or for a lower price.
A budget of RM$3000 is workable but you need to negotiate a little with them.

    Regards,
    Lawrence

I am just browsing through the internet and found this link. FYI, i know that in JB, some bridal studio can offer more than what i’ve seen in this link.
RM3888 for more than 50 poses. You should bargain more of what you want with the bridal studio to get this kind of much reasonable package.

It is possible if we know the market offer well, my sis got the package from a wedding studio located somewhere near Nusa Bestari.. i think the some of the shops there offer more reasonable prices due to that it is competitive for new market.

    2. Does it provide free altering for FIL suit as well and do we need to pay extra dry cleaning?

Sure, you can just get the gowns for the actual day, range around RM$1000. There is no obligation to take up their standard packages with Photographs, if you have already taken them at another BS.

Makeup and Hairdo are available if you select their in-house make up artist. That will typically cost you an additional RM$400 (morning and for wedding banquet).

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

Hi, any additions to the number of photos they are giving u? Makes more sense to negotiate as a package:

    For example: 10 pcs + 30 more poses + 20 more pages = RM$xxx.

    [Reply]

  • 25. juneNo Gravatar  |  June 23rd, 2009 at 1:57 PM

initial packages only 20pages with 21 poses. after seeing the photo, they only told me add more poses will make the album nicer. so we added 10 poses with rm 500.

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

Hi, can I find out how much you paid for the package and with which bridal house? Most Bridal House offers pages:poses in the ratio of 2:3. So for example, 20 pages for 30 poses. This ensures your album does not look too bare, and you have more flexibility in the design. But then again, you might had gotten a value deal in the first place.

And to clarify, 500RM for 10 additional poses and NOT 10 pieces of different outfit? 500RM for 10 additional poses (without any addition to pages) seems a little on the high side. You might want to negotiate down a little (RM$350-RM$400).

  • 26. juneNo Gravatar  |  June 23rd, 2009 at 5:54 PM

    Oh I see.

Anyway the price (RM 500) was agreed when we viewed the photos. We were inexperienced and too ‘nice’ people.

Our initial packages details (RM 2288) are as below:

1.1 main album ( 20 pages and 21 poses), and 1 smaller album (exactly same as the main album)
2.5 outfits ( 3 wedding gowns + 2 evening gowns), we had exchanged 2 traditional outfits with 1 wedding gown as we found the japan/korean traditional outfits are not nice
3.2 table top photos(with 1 upgrade to crystal frame)
4.bedside photoframe(upgrade to the size of 6pcs of A4 papers, not sure the size in inches )
5.Rental of Actual day wedding gown + 1 evening gown, accessory
6.Rental of Actual day suit ( 3 suits)
    7.Car decor + hand flowers
    8.60 pcs of free photos
    9.2 free gift
    10.free DVD for selected photos

Do you think its good deal?

HI Claire, no updates so far on when the next Bridal Fair will be in JB but we will keep you posted. You are still 6 months away so there is still sufficient time for you to get the photoshoot done. Btw, if you are a competitive negotiator, you don’t have the wait for the bridal fair to get a decent deal. :-)

Hi Admin, I see that venus and fables are the more popular shops. Can you teach me a trick or two on what to expect for the wedding photoshoot package and how to get a god deal? Thanks

    [Reply]

    adminNo Gravatar Reply:

    Hi CU,

You can refer to our post here: http://www.limsimi.com/services-johor-bahru/wedding-bridal-packages-johor-bahru/wedding-photoshoot-in-johor-bahru/

In addition, do visit the studio of the bridal houses.
For interior shoots, see the backdrops they are providing and assess if it is to your liking.
For outdoor shoots, you are able to choose the location you want the shoot to be done, so this is pretty much consistent among the bridal houses.

Another thing to watch out for is to conserve your energy for the whole day. Too often have I encountered albums where couples look so tired with such a fake smile at the tail end of the photoshoot as they are simply too tired. Keep your enthusiam up for the whole day!

To get a good deal – negotiate all the big items first. Be unrelentless but do not threaten with “I will go to the next bridal house if you do not give me what I want..”. If you do that, they will firmly tell you that they are unable to do your business. Be reasonable too. For example, if they offer you 22 pages, do not negotiate for 32 pages at the same price. Usually, they will be able to throw in 2 more pages for free or at a steep discount.

Leave the small things at the end of the negotiation. They will usually acquiesce items like musical box (if you really want it), extra guestbook, small 3r album to close the deal, especially if they have already spent so much effort earlier to agree on the big items.

Finally, if you are a Singaporean, their make up artist do not come cheap. They charge SG rates if you require them to come into Singapore on the AD.

oh my god.. lol.. im frm sg and is going to get married soon.. i just went to venus bridal studio over the weekend. it was funny actually.. i was going to have dinner with my HTB over at the taman sri kebrau hawker centre, and since we finished early, we decided to go walk walk around the area. we had no prior plans to go bridal package shopping because we were set on doing it in sg(like most sg people feel – safe, easy, convenient). however, as we were walking, two bridal studios caught my eyes – Venus and Fable.

Fable is a two storey bridal studio with manequins at the full length glass windows. the whole place was huge and expensive-looking. venus was a little smaller, but still magnificent looking. my HTB and i decided to look at venus.

i dare say i was blown away. the package was abt 50% cheaper than sg’s prices, their photography was awesome, and their albums had very nice themes(like what pipi said). the things in the package was comprehensive and they gave so many things.

i decided to try on gowns after gowns, and the nice salesman(forgot his name) helped me so eagerly and professionally. they had soo many designer gowns to choose frm as well.

anyways, i did not even sign on the dotted line bcos i didnt bring enough ringgit, and my HTB and i had to go hme and discuss as well. when we told the salesman that, he did not even pressurise us a single bit. just gave us his name card, and of course said he hopes to hear from us soon.

    oevrall,

    service: 5/5
    clothes: 4/5
    photography 4/5
    hair and makeup: 4/5

im going to sign the package end of this month. yay!

Hi, seen all your comments on BS on Venus & Fable. Any comments on BS at Nusa Bestari or Skudai area? Any Tips on how to negotiate with BS?
Any of local packages which go overseas for the photoshooting?

Hi Esther, Nusa Bestari (Tun Aminah) is generally cheaper.

Otherwise, the gown are of a later design in Johor Bahru town area.

I took an album at Nusa Bestari, JB

I took the album with Price RM 4,000. The sales personnel are very friendly and kind. i appreciate their services.however, after i signed the contract, everything is changed.

1st, my friend took the same package as me (value), however, their package is better than us a lot! (i should refer to his package 1st). after i negogiate with the sales personnel. they give us a lot of excuse, but my fr just signed before 2 mths than me, so much diff???

At the end, we took the album and select for photo, then we used the “free gift” to compesate the pages and post, the price of the “free gift” is same like stock market, drop other 50% of initial value, funny, cause we dont have much bargain power….. haiz….

After we added some other pages and post, the price is very high! compare to others SHOP AT CITY AREA. cause they said They are “BRANDED” in JB, We are Branded at SKudai!

When our wedding dinner, we dont likw the design of the CD and the poster and the design of our car… then seem dont care and treat us as “Carrot Head” again, Want more nicer, can, Pay more!

We out of our budget and they treat us as “carrot Head” after we lost any BARGAINING POWER”

Advice: Refer to any of your friend or relative before you take any Wedding Album at Skudai.

Hi, I am going with Fables and do a photoshoot this Aug with them.

One thing is, both fables and venus do not really entertain plus size brides. Quite disappointing that Venus rejected us outright as a customer =(

We went to Fables based on recommendations by our friends. Sad to say that plus size (size UK14 onwards) quite hard to get nice gowns. And to MTM requires RM $1000.00 more. So i suggest plus size brides to stick to Sporean shops (more bigger sized gowns).

Hi all… I signed with fables and had quite a gd deal… The lady wasn’t pushy compared to the ones I went to at printemps.. Went to a number of bs today.. The one at printemps really gave me a v bad impression… The lady is so hard sell and refuses to answer our questions directly. Instead, she went on to talk about how great the photographer was and how pretty I will look… I was v irritated with her that I stomped off.. It wasn’t easy to shake her off.. Anyway, I signed up with fables after going to all the other bs.. They offered us 3688 and below is what we got:

12×12 album which we tot was too small
1 more album for mum with the same number of photos
22pages and 30 poses but we argued to 24 pages and 35 poses
    2 table top photos
    1 poster
1 photo for the bed which was quite small comparatively but a gd size la
Car deco and bouquet of flowers
    7 outfits for photoshoots
1 wedding gown and 2 evening gown( originally only 1 evening gown but we took away photos for frenz) on actual day
2 coats for groom on actual day
Only makeup and hairdo on the day of shoot
    1dvd with 2 songs
    1 cdr of photos
Actually I do wedding offered 3588 with all these but a bigger album but we chose fables cuz the lady seemed more experienced and nice lol.. The gowns were nicer too.. More varieties.. Venus was not bad too but I think it’s too overrated lol… But I guess Venus and fables were more value for money… Anyway, choose wisely, I think wads important is to find someone u r more comfortable to work with :)

Totally agreed. It is important that you look forward to the wedding shoot and not see it as a chore or something pressuring. As such, you really need a bridal house you are truly comfortable with.

Hi, i’m a La Veil bride and i’m full of praises for their photographer, MUA and services.

If I say their girls there are not pushy, I will be lying. It is their job to sell. But if you are determined, they can’t really force you. :)

I was really happy with their gowns, etc. Thus I topped up my package til about 10 000 RM.

My package is kinda different coz for me, I don’t need actual day photographer, etc.

If you want to find out more or want to see the photos, email me at dozzie21@hotmail.com

Please state subject as La Veil Package.

This in case the photo quality is not up to standard – there is still a card you can play.

Hi, last week I went with my brother n wife-to-be last week to shop for their wedding package in JB. As my bro is on a very tight budget, we avoided the popular ones like Venus, Fables and City Square, we went to 2 other location (Tun Aminah and Johor Jaya) recommended by the locals and found some pushy, some inflexible and some ‘everything can’ which I seriously doubt they can. In total, we visited 9 BS and they signed with Valentine @RM1788.

These are some things that I learnt and would like to share some tips with all bride-to-be,
    1. Check if there is a lot of digital editing, i.e superimpose of the background. Or, they do have the actual backdrop. Cos this will affect the natural ‘look’ of the finished photo as well as determine the value of money spent.

    2. Always ask how much it will cost for extra pictures, the range can be from RM60 – RM120, and the cost should be for edited picture not the original output. Normally, couple will add 2 pages rather than 1 page, as adding only 1 page, the other side of the album will be left empty which can be quite unsightly.

    3. Check the payment method, some ask for upfront payment before the shoot, some is in stages. Also, remember to check the require deposit for rental of gowns, it can range from RM300 – RM500.

    4. Ask if the shoot includes nail polish, eye lashes, hair spray n stick on bras etc The one that my sister-in-law went to charge RM180 for all the above plus 2 hair protein applications.

They picked Valentine at Tun Aminah, more because of their service and the flexibility and cost. If you are not that fussy about digital finishes or ‘the standard outlook of the album, frame’ and prefer service, you should go try them out.

Their gowns are pretty, nice and updated every month. They even let you try before any commitment. (We actually went back to sign with them after visiting others)

The lady, Yvonne, was great and not pushy at all and flexible with our request.

    Here is their package:
    - 1 main album (21 pages, one photo for the big frame), and 1 smaller album (photos exactly same as the main album)
    - 6 outfits (3 wedding gowns + 3 evening gowns), you can exchange for traditional or theme outfits.
    - 2 table top photos
    - 1 photo frame with picture embedded in the background)
    - Rental of Actual day wedding gown + 1 evening gown, accessory (we exchange the evening gown for 2 suits for the father-in-laws)
    - Rental of Actual day suit
    - Car decor + hand flowers (we exchange the car décor for 2 pages, hence total album has 23 pages)
    - 80 pcs of free photos
    - CD of the selected photos (in high reso, which you can blow up to poster size!!) Some BS got the cheek to tell us that no BS in JB will give you in high reso and the best they can give is in 200dpi!! they really take us as ‘idiots’. Well, being the typical one, we requested for minimal 600dpi.

That’s all for now, will update you on the actual photo shoot and the outcome. Happy Shopping 

Bcos of the theme, I’m mainly looking for country farm natural shoot as outdoor. The packages that were offered to me range from between RM$2888-RM$7888. For the specific breakdown of the Packages, I will update u all tmr. Each BS has its strengths. Like La Veil, they reali throw in lot

Perks and is by far the one favoured by my hubby-to-be. For me personally, I like Inspiration lot cos the specific photographer who I like to engage is David as he is e award winning photographer and the gowns are very exquisite- jus like the ones found in Singapore. And hence the price is high- RM$7888. As for She wedding, gotta say tt for special effect l

Special effect lovers, u will love She wedding cos they Hv spent RM$100K recently to revamps their shoots. The props they owns can easily beat any BS down. I will be hunting ard for another 2-3 trips before I decide who I will sign my package with. Meanwhile my advice is be clear of wat u want- ur objective and be firm- dun b pushed over by the sales staff :) tmr I will share with u all the details of the individual package as now I’m rather brain dead aft mind fighting with staff. Sorry, I didn’t realise anyone will ask me anything here since I have left my email address. It was a very random post I made then.

My package was quite different from the normal package. I took it purely for phototaking and also for the gowns and suits for my actual day. The initial package price was RM5000++ but we kept adding poses and pages and I selected 14 gowns instead of the 7 gowns stated in the package.

My photos are in my blog but I’m not comfortable with my blog address to be publicized on the net. (if not, I would have posted it myself right?)

Hi future, it is mainly at these places only. For nature as a background, try the Sultan Garden and Hutan Bandar.
